In SEO Web Design - Search Engine Optimization In A Nutshell
Many articles and books have been written on Search Engine Optimization by experts and nonexperts. And there are many debates about the various techniques of how to optimize websites so that traffic has increased. But my purpose here is to explain what I believe are the important basis that you should know.
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It is defined as the process of increasing the traffic (the amount of visitors) to a web site. The higher the ranking of a website the more likely it will be visited by someone. You yourself know that when you go to Google and search for something that usually displays the first page that comes out and maybe the second page before you find something. Then, where it ranks a website is essential for directing more traffic. SEO helps to ensure that a site is easily available to a search engine.
But, what is a "search engine"? A search engine is a software program that searches documents (web pages) for specific keywords and key phrases and returns a list of Web pages they have found the keywords and keyword phrases. Google would be a good example.
In general, as a search engine works with both the sending of a "spider" to retrieve web pages possible. Then an "indexer" reads these web pages and creates a catalog based on the words contained within each web page. Each search engine uses a proprietary algorithm so that the results are reported specific.
A "spider" or "webcrawler", as it is sometimes called, is a program that automatically retrieves web pages and are used to send these pages to search engines. It's called a spider because it crawls through the web. Because most Web pages contain links to other web pages, a spider can start a little 'everywhere. Not just "sees" a link to another page, goes out and catches it.
You're probably wondering: How do I get my website included in search engine queries?
A search engine finds the information from the lists submitted by the authors who accept (website owners) who want exposure, or to obtain information from "web crawlers", "spider" or "robots," programs that roam the Internet and store information about each page they visit.
It usually starts with a list of categorized links, which are usually the most popular websites, or better, and then follow these links to find more links are added to the database. Unfortunately this makes most search engines biased towards the most popular websites. The web crawler might send back only the title and URL, or may send the entire page.
About keywords and key phrases in SEO
It 's very important to have your keywords and keyword phrases your basic object-oriented web site. Keywords are important, but the key phrases can be of vital importance.
Here's why: Suppose you have a website all about classical music for children. Go to Google and type "music" (without the quotes) into the search area. Probably got about 1.08 billion results (at the time of writing) with the best web sites to be located within the first page or two. What do you think are your chances of being one of them?
Thus, for "music" as one of the keywords would be a good choice. It 's too wide. But, what if you were to make a more specific keyword phrase for your website by inserting "children's music"? This time it got about 188,000,000 listings. And then even more specific, "classical music for children", where you can get about 45,700,000 listings. And finally, "Mozart for Children", which gave you about 3,110,000 listings. So you see how it works? The more specific your keywords and key phrases, the more specific your results will be and your ability to get targeted visitors to your web site will increase. This is particularly important if you are paying for these clicks, such as PPC (Pay Per Click) advertising.
About the Title Tag in SEO
The most important area of your Web page is the title. The title is the title or label of the webpage. This is what you see on the header of the web browser, like Internet Explorer, when a web page comes up. Simple enough? You would think so, but in reality is not so simple.
How many pages make up your web site? Everyone should have his title. What should you put in a title? Well, for starters, check out what keywords and keyword phrases are more appropriate for what is on the specific web page. For example, going back to classical music site for children, we see that "Mozart for Children" has been used as passphrase, but wait, you also have information on Beethoven, Bach, Chopin and Debussy.
Page first page, or index (Home) will be where people are directed first. This is where you introduce yourself and your website. This is where you will be offered to generalize about the music of Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Chopin and Debussy. So it would be logical to "classical music for children" as a title tag and then if you have each page as a result of more specific, like "Mozart for kids", you could do that the title of that specific web page. So if you're one of those people who think "Welcome to my website" is a good title, think again!
About the domain names in SEO
Equally important is the domain name. A domain name should also include a keyword of what your site is about. For example, you want to have a website of classical music for children. You have collected all the information and content written for each page dividing them by composers. You now have a conglomeration of information on classical music for children. You can choose "classicalmusicforchildren.com" as a domain name, or "kidsclassicalmusic.com" or simply "classicalmusic4kids.com". Get the idea?
About Meta Tags in SEO
Meta tags provide information about the document to search engines for inclusion of your website in their indexes. Although Google ignores meta tags, except perhaps for the meta description tag, but the other search engines use them.
The two meta tags that search engines are looking for the meta keywords tag and meta description tag. We have already touched on the keywords and the description tag is basically a description of the keyword phrase your website. It should only be 10-20 words describing with keyword rich content, but should read intelligible for the user. Each search engine is different in the way he looks at each web site, however, the keyword meta tag has been much abused by some webmasters, it will use unrelated words in order to attract more traffic. This is taking quite a chance because some search engines to ban a website to "spam" with tons of keywords that are highly independent. But if used wisely and in conjunction with other things on your web pages, including the content, then it is likely that the search engines will scan the whole site.
About content in SEO
Content is king. We can not stress this enough. What you say in your website and how to say it is very important for search engines. Keep it full of keywords and key phrases, while making it easy to read and understand. Remember, it takes about 6-10 seconds to lose a visitor, so keep it short and to the point.
The time required to get included in the database of the search engine is typically about 6-8 weeks. No one has control over how long this process takes. But what most people do not realize is that once a website is listed in a categorized database, there will be a long time unless there are regular updates to this website. Search engines are very smart. They will check their databases to see if there are web sites again and see if they have been recently updated.
